... at 57 murders a day, and if we consider a de facto population of almost sixty million given the large presence of undocumented migrants, we have a homicide rate in the mid thirties per 100K of population, and we can expect that every year one in three thousand of us will be murdered.
Compare that to our senior BRICS partner, China, with about about half a homicide per 100k ... !!!
India has less than a handful, Russia less than a dozen.
Brazil is almost as violent as South Africa, at about thirty homicides per 100k, in twelfth spot whereas we are tenth in the most violent nations!
The trauma and economic damage that this does to our communities is massive!
There should be a crucial distinction made between violent and non-violent crime, a disincentive to make criminals think twice before they use violence.
Non violent criminal, apart from serious economic crimes, should never be incarcerated,
They should instead be made to perform lengthy spells of community service if necessary, a year of Sundays for that matter.
This will free the prison space to sentence violent criminals to far greater periods behind bars with higher thresholds set for any parole.
By mixing non-violents with violents in prison, we incentivize the violent as we provide human prey to the latter to establish status hierarchies that they can obtain satisfaction from.
