A record low in the Arctic's geographical footprint is expected by end August ...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-19330307 The tragic events at the Marikana mine are a lesson in Sustainability.
Sustainability requires socio-economic and political harmony, without which the physical environment is vulnerable. Now an irresponsible 'leader' is urging miners to continue to strike and prepare "to die" for the cause. The very same Julius Malema is unlikely to put himself in harm's way but the sons, brothers and fathers of many, shocked by the tragedy, were glued to his incitement speech as they sat listening to Malema in his Che Gievara like outfit. Unlike Malema, they will put themselves in harms way and the platinum industry in South Africa now faces a very serious situation. Less short term greed on the part of the Lonmin shareholders would have been far more beneficial to their long term business interests. Worse still, that Cyril Ramaphosa was not able to use his influence as a substantial shareholder and help avert such a tragedy is dismaying. Hopefully the compassionate yet much maligned President Jacob Zuma will be able to use his charisma and his past peace-making experiences to avert more tragedy. Another useful perspective: http://dailymaverick.co.za/article/2012-08-20-analysis-cry-the-beloved-country-once-more Sustainability is not just action about the physical environment. Wherever there is injustice there is the potential for unsustainability.
The chickens will always come home to roost on this matter, and we need to understand that the physical environment is crucially dependent on socio-economic and political harmony now that Humankind is so powerful. Russia's sentencing of Pussy Riot is Inquisitional, and unbecoming of a nation that should by now have become enlightened. Peace loving, enlightened Russians must be squirming in embarrassment for their nation ... ! Which goes to show that being first in Space does not guarantee absence of regime stupidity! As for some of the leaders within the Orthodox Church, they seem to be sadly lacking in their understanding of the Christ. How they allowed the regime to prevail is dismaying. http://in.reuters.com/article/2012/08/09/us-science-waste-electricity-idINBRE87813520120809
Microbes that process sewerage can also generate electricity! The new science of electro-microbiology is taking root ... http://www.timeslive.co.za/scitech/2012/08/07/telkom-fined-r449-million-for-bullying
The statutory monopoly that the South African telecommnuications utility enjoys has influenced the culture of the organisation. Not only are they are not even pretending to desire a free market - they are claiming it was their legal right to act in an aniti-free market right! In the meantime the Consumer bears the brunt of higher prices due to the lesser comeptition. Telkom may be 'sustainable' through its legal protection but it impedes the Sustainability of the Consumer at large. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tom-zeller-jr/mitt-romney-wind-power_b_1738064.html?utm_campaign=080312&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Alert-green&utm_content=FullStory
Surely playing fields become level only when current and past incentives are fully accounted for? http://www.smartplanet.com/blog/intelligent-energy/romney-opposes-wind-tax-credit/18212?tag=nl.e660
The Chinese take another view ... the new national flower of China is the Wind Turbine. It will take a while still to free the world from the power of the vested interests in oil and other non-renewable energy sources ... but these are useful steps in that direction.
