Madonna Calls For Freedom ... From Russia With Love!

... the idea that Sustainability can be achieved in societies which are not free is an illusion; whatever 'sustainability' seems to be evident is at most short term.

We saw this in Apartheid South Africa, and we saw this in the Soviet Union.

We see this in North Korea today ... despite the precision of its citizens standing in neat rows in its parade squares it struggles to feed itself.  Something very familiar in that precision, it recalls our 'khaki clad kadet' days on high school rugby fields in Apartheid South Africa! Exercises in futility ... ! Totalitarianism is the same, regardless.

We see this in a China which has seen the writing on the wall ... it is already a far cry from the Days of Mao. Without realising it, it has set in motion a process that can only culminate with an increasing sense of individualism ... and freedom. With its long standing roots in the peaceful traditions of Buddhism and Taoism we may yet witness the emergence of a global beacon of Compassion, despite its past demonisation. Ideological poisons have not yet trumped human DNA.

We need more Madonnas and Pussy Riots and John Lennons ... and less of the Madmen bringing death and destruction in the name of various Lilliputian Causes.

Then Sustainability is possible ...
